Can I apply online?

To view the status of your application and pending documents, you can log into the St. Mary’s University Application Portal.  For specific questions, contact the Office of Graduate Admission at graduate@stmarytx.edu.

How do I find out the status of my application? How do I find out if all of my supporting documents have been received?

No.

Is there an application fee?

Once an application is complete (i.e., received official transcripts or international credential evaluation, GRE/GMAT test scores, resume, statement of purpose, and recommendation letters and/or additional materials), the Office of Graduate Admission will forward your application to the Graduate Admission Committee for review.

What happens to my application once all of my materials are submitted?

It means all required materials have been received, reviewed, and forwarded to the graduate program director for their admission decision.

If I contact the Office of Graduate Admission and they say my application file is “complete,” what does that mean?

After all the required application materials have been received, it normally takes one to two weeks for an application decision to be made. However, a few programs may have a priority deadline (i.e., the doctoral program) and students are, typically, notified within the next month after their respective deadlines.

To do so, log into the St. Mary’s University Application Portal and go to the recommendations section under your application checklist. You can click on a recommender and use the “Send Reminder” option.

How do I send another email request to my recommender?

You will receive an email notification with instructions on how to access the admission decision.  The Office of Graduate Admission is the only office authorized to formally issue an admission decision. Any notification you may receive directly from the graduate program are not official until you have received an email from the Office of Graduate Admission. If admitted, please read all information received carefully and follow instructions provided. There are several steps required to accept an admission offer.

How will I be informed of my admission decision?

Test Scores

We require all applicants whose native language is not English and who have completed all or part of their post-secondary education in a country where English is not the native language to submit an English competency exam: either the TOEFL or IELTS. Note, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we also accept the Duolingo English test as an alternate. This requirement may be waived if you earned a degree from an English-speaking institution.

  • Please note if your TOEFL total score is between 80-82 or IELTS is a band score 6.0, you may be required to enroll in EN 6301, Academic Writing for International Students, during their first FA/SP semester.
  • The TOEFL and IELTS are administered at test centers throughout the world at different times during the year. You may access information regarding the TOEFL or IELTS exam, including registration and sample tests, at http://ets.org/toefl or http://ielts.org
Who is required to submit English language proficiency results, such as TOEFL/IELTS?

If you have earned or will be earning a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, you are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score as a part of your application process.

Do I need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score if I have earned or am currently earning my bachelor’s/master’s/doctoral degree from a U.S. university?

St. Mary’s University institution code is 6637.

When I order my TOEFL from ETS, what is the institution code for St. Mary’s University?

No. However, once your application has been submitted, you can check to see if your scores have been received through the St. Mary’s University Application Portal. Please note it takes approximately two weeks after the order date or four weeks after the test date for ETS to make official TOEFL score reports available to the university. IELTS score delivery times may vary since they must be received by mail. Because IELTS scores must be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admission, you must contact the program if you have any questions regarding their arrival.

Can you tell me if my TOEFL/IELTS scores have arrived?

For complete details, please go to our English Proficiency section on the International Student page.

What is the minimum English requirement for international students?

Test scores may not pre-date the student’s application by more than six (6) months. Official scores must be sent directly to St. Mary’s University from the testing agency (school code 6637).

My TOEFL/IELTS score expired. Will I still be considered for admission?

GRE scores for the required programs must be sent to St. Mary’s University electronically from ETS. Use the St. Mary’s institution code 6637 when sending your scores to St. Mary’s. You do not need to enter a specific department code. Scores will be matched to your applicant record rather than to a specific department.
