September is National Suicide Prevention Month

Student Health and Wellness Programs celebrates September as National Suicide Prevention Month, where we believe everyone has the potential to help save a life.

What is Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)

QPR is a suicide prevention technique, also known as gatekeeper training. It teaches people without professional mental health backgrounds to recognize the signs that someone may be considering suicide. Just as people train in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver to help save thousands of lives each year, people train in QPR to learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help.

Gatekeepers are able to:

  • Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
  • Know how to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
  • Recognize the common causes of suicidal behavior
  • Recognize the warning signs of suicide
  • Get help for someone in crisis
