The English Communication major at St. Mary’s University is a unique interdisciplinary degree plan. The program offers students the opportunity to hone their critical thinking and writing abilities, integrating these with media-production skills, in preparation for rewarding careers and enriched lives in a rapidly changing world.

Because the degree is rooted in the humanities, students explore various areas in literature and theory to develop their metaphorical thinking and creative abilities.

Communication skills — particularly writing — are the most valued skills employers are looking for in college graduates, according to recent research conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers and the National Commission on Writing.

Online Learning

The English Literature and Language department has found that technology opens up the way we read and think about literature, writing and language. We worked hard in Spring 2020 to make our online experience work for our students and our subject matter. You will see some examples below of what this may look like for faculty and for students. The faculty are excited to continue to experiment with hybrid courses, in-person use of technology, and online courses. Our faculty are certified in online teaching pedagogy.
