About the Robert Noyce Scholars Program

The Robert Noyce Scholars Program is offered to undergraduate students enrolled in one of the four Sciences, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) with teacher certification degree programs at St. Mary’s University. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF Award #2448453), this program offers support services starting their freshman year and the opportunity to apply for a $13,750 annual Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship starting their junior year. Also open to transfer students, the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship is available for up to three years (six semesters), is stackable and can be combined with any other scholarship a student has received.

    Students who meet the requirements will be invited to apply for the $13,750 annual Robert Noyce Scholars Program Teacher Scholarship during the spring semester of their sophomore year.


Eligibility Criteria


Support Services

To be eligible for support services, you must plan to be a first-time K-12 STEM teacher and declared as a major in one of the following Bachelor of Arts with Teacher Certification programs:

Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Consideration

Teachers and students in the Robert Noyce Scholars Program explore the outdoors.

Applications will be reviewed by the St. Mary’s Noyce Scholars Review Committee, and scholarships will be awarded based on the following merit.

  • Have at least 60 credit hours and six STEM courses completed.
  • Have a 3.0 GPA overall and a 2.8 GPA in STEM-specific courses, and maintain them throughout the program.
  • Commitment to two years of K-12 STEM teaching at high-need public school districts for each year the scholarship support is received.

Required Materials for Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Application


Juniors and Seniors

Complete the NSF Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship application for the second semester of sophomore year by submitting

  • Two letters of recommendation
    • One must be from a St. Mary’s STEM faculty (or other college-level STEM faculty for transfer students)
  • A personal statement responding to specific prompts

Interview Invitation

Applicants who meet the program requirements will receive and invitation to interview.

Acknowledge and Commitment

If selected, students must acknowledge and commit to two years of STEM teaching in a high-need public school district for each year of scholarship support received.
