St. Mary's University has a plan in place to deal with an outbreak of Swine Flu should there be such an occurrence. Sandra Vasquez, M.D., Director of the St. Mary's University Student Health Center, is actively monitoring the situation and is in frequent contact with state and local public health officials. The University community will be frequently updated on the Swine Flu situation and notified immediately should there be changes in the situation that affect St. Mary's students, faculty and staff. In the meantime, you may find the following resource links informative.

B.R.A.D.
Be Responsible About Drinking

The B.R.A.D. Organization: This organization was founded by the family and friends of Bradley McCue, a Michigan State University junior, who died of alcohol poisoning after celebrating his 21st birthday. It is their hope that the educational information distributed by the organization will prevent other families from suffering the loss that they have sustained.

Mission Statement: To impart information that will encourage and enable responsible decision making concerning alcohol.

Purpose: To educate young adults (high school and college age) and their parents as to the responsible use of alcohol, the effects of alcohol and how to deal with excess use by others.

Goals: To work with high school, colleges and other organizations and institutions to communicate information about responsible use of alcohol. To address high school and college age young adults and their parents as appropriate.

Alcohol Poisoning - A MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Signs and Symptoms:

  1. Unconsciousness or semi consciousness Slow respirations (breaths) of eight or less per minute, or lapses between respirations of more than eight seconds. Cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin In the event of alcohol poisoning, these signs and sysmptoms will most likely be accompanied by a strong odor of alcohol.
  2. While these are obvious signs of alcohol poisoning, the list is certainly not all inclusive.

Appropriate Action:

If you encounter a person who exhibits one or more of the signs and symptoms, do what you would do in any medical emergency: CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY

While waiting for 911 transport, gently turn the intoxicated person on his/her side and maintain that position by placing a pillow in the small of the person's back. This is important to prevent aspiration (choking) should the person vomit. Stay with the person until medical help arrives.

Visits with the doctor are made by appointment only by calling 210-436-3506. Same-day appointments can be made by calling the clinic or on a walk-in basis. Students are encouraged to call during morning hours if they wish to be seen on the same day.NOTICE: The Student Health Center will be closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. every week in the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters for medical software training. We appreciate your patience as we work to implement a practice management software and electronic medical record system. If you have an emergency, please contact campus police at x3330.
