Heather Hill is Keeping an Eye on the Whales
Heather Hill, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology, first experienced working with marine mammals during her graduate work at the University of Southern Mississippi. Her professor and mentor, a language expert, was part of a comparative psychology dolphin study. This early work with marine mammal cognition and behavioral development fostered a passion for research that has influenced her career trajectory.
HSS Alumni Spotlight: Adriana Villafranca
As a St. Mary’s University student, Adriana Gonzalez de Villafranca was observant. She watched others follow their dreams and pursue opportunities, carefully planning how she would do the same. An English Communications student, she was first attracted to television media and worked for a time at Telemundo. Villafranca quickly realized she would rather be in “the trenches,” helping to bring positive change in her community. She earned her undergraduate degree in 1993, and followed that with a Masters of Public Administration in 1995.
Teresa Van Hoy’s Scholarly Pilgrimage
History Professor Teresa Van Hoy, Ph.D., began what she calls her “scholarly pilgrimage” in June 2011 when she became O’Connor Chair for the History of Hispanic Texas and the Southwest. As the O’Connor Chair, she has been granted two years for extensive research and to write a book. She receives the University’s support through course releases, which give her the time for presentations and lectures both on and off campus while focusing on her research as a Borderlands scholar.
