Graduate Theology HomeThe Theology department offers courses and degree programs at the graduate level for a wide variety of students interested in the insights offered by the academic study of theology. During the regular semesters courses are taught in the evenings, Monday through Thursday. Each course meets once per week. Four courses are offered in a semester. Shorter, intensive courses are offered in the summer. In addition to the main campus in San Antonio, courses can be taken through distance learning centers in Austin, Marble Falls, College Station, and Temple. No one profile describes all our graduate students, but most have full-time jobs in the day and take courses one or two evenings a week toward the M.A. in Theology. (At two evenings per week the twelve required courses would take six semesters.) Students often use their degrees for various church ministries, religious education, or go on to pursue doctoral studies. Theology at St. Mary's is rooted in the Catholic tradition, but welcomes students of all backgrounds who share our commitment to the compatibility of faith and reason and the need for critical inquiry in the search of insight wherever it may be found. All graduate students in Theology who are or will be involved in church ministry receive a 50% tuition grant. ProgramsMaster of Arts Programs Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry Joint Law/Theology (JD/TH) Program Theology, Law, and Government A new series of interdisciplinary courses that can be taken outside of a degree program. Graduate or continuing education students from all backgrounds are welcome, especially those engaged in the study or practice of law, government, and community leadership. These courses are part of the normal theology curriculum, but are also open to students outside the degree program. Fall 2010, "The Law of Moses" studies the Law of Moses in its ancient context and through its influence and interpretation in western religious, legal, and political thought. Fall 2010, "Biomedical Issues and Catholic Thought" includes treatment of law as related to significant legal decisions in the area of medical ethics.
