Many high school students spend a lot of time researching and applying for college, but Lois Traynor knew instantly that St. Mary’s University was for her.

The South San Antonio High School senior, who graduates in May, will not only be attending the University, but is the first person from South San Antonio ISD to be accepted into the prestigious Greehey Scholars Program at the University’s Greehey School of Business.
The Program is for outstanding incoming undergraduate freshmen and develops students who exhibit outstanding ethical leadership, technical excellence, global awareness and professional orientation. It also includes full tuition, stipends for study abroad opportunities and funding for extra-curricular activities.
The Program was funded through a generous donation by St. Mary’s alumnus Bill Greehey (B.B.A. ’60).
“We are thrilled to welcome Lois Traynor to the Greehey Scholars Program at St. Mary’s University,” said Rosie Perez, Program Coordinator for the Greehey Scholars. “Lois has already demonstrated the talent, dedication and character that reflect the values of the Greehey School of Business. We are confident she will excel within this highly competitive scholarship program and make a meaningful impact on our St. Mary’s community.”
Lois spoke about her decision to attend St. Mary’s.
Q: Can you share why you decided to apply for St Mary’s?
A: St. Mary’s was always my primary choice for college. I applied early because I knew everywhere else that I applied to was a secondary school. I interacted with the staff, I interacted with fellow students, and I interacted closely with alumni. I never once had a negative experience.
Q: Can you tell us about one of those experiences?
A: Father Jim Tobin (Chaplain for the Greehey School of Business) was so nice and so kind; it was crazy to see him again in the Greehey Scholars Program interview process. I just felt a peaceful energy on campus.
Q: Do you have a major picked out?
A: I met with Professor Caroline Chen (Assistant Professor of Accounting), and she convinced me to major in Accounting.
Q: How does it feel knowing you are the first person from South San Antonio High School to be accepted into the Greehey Scholars Program?
A: It’s a great opportunity to represent my school and the amazing staff who have poured so much help and support into me. They never once doubted me. They told me I could do anything, even when I didn’t believe that I could.
