WICHITA, Kan. – The Rattlers were able to avenge an early-season loss Saturday as they overtook Newman University 4-1 on the Jets’ home field with senior Anthony Bustos responsible for half of the Rattlers’ goal celebrations.
St. Mary’s (4-8-1, 3-3-1 in conference) sunk in its second straight Heartland Conference victory in Saturday’s triumph over the Jets (4-9-1, 3-5-1 in conference).
Double-netter Bustos (Helotes, Texas) first struck 10 minutes into the game against the Jets, assisted by fellow senior Andrew Carrasco (Corpus Christi, Texas), who would also see double in assists before the day was over.
Carrasco finished with a goal of his own a minute after Bustos changed the scoreboard with an unassisted strike, allowing the Rattlers to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Jets responded quickly in the second half with a goal three minutes in, denying Patrick Kasperitis (RS-Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas,) who totaled six saves, of a shutout to make the game 2-1. Newman’s short stint at a comeback was first stunted by the game’s first striker, Bustos, at the 56th minute mark with a rare first-ever career assist by the Rattlers’ goalie Kasperitis to make it 3-1. Freshman Jack Wolf (Richardson, Texas) stunted the Jets for good in the 68th minute mark with a goal assisted by Carrasco for his second assist on the day.
The trio of Bustos, Wolf and Carrasco has become the Rattlers’ leading goal scorers with Bustos and Wolf topping at four goals apiece followed by Carrasco with three, with Saturday marking the second game out of the Rattlers’ three wins that the three have all scored in the victory.
Bustos, Wolf and Carrasco made the majority of the Rattlers’ stats Saturday with all nine shots on goal for the game coming from three shots on goal from each.
St. Mary’s three hotshots and the rest of the Rattlers continue on the road to play rival St. Edward’s University Thursday in Austin, Texas at 3:30 p.m.
