GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Matt Vela is tied for 23rd place and has the St. Mary’s men’s golf team sitting at 15th in the three-round NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Region Golf Tournament.

Vela (Sr., San Antonio) shot a 73 in the opening round at the Cherry Blossom Golf Course two weeks after the Rattlers qualified with a fifth-place finish at the Heartland Conference Golf Championship.

All of the Rattlers shot in the 70s, with Jeff Rein (Sr., San Antonio), Chris Becker (Jr., San Antonio) and Shawn Bennett (Fr., Marion, Texas) each shooting 76 in the 20-team tournament.

Junior Sam Jernigan, a San Antonio native, shot 78.

The Rattlers shot 301 as a team, joining a flood of teams hovering around the 300 mark. They are one shot out of 12th place and five away from cracking the top 10.

Wayne State leads after one round at 287, while Abilene Christian’s Cyril Bouniol paces the individual standings after shooting a blistering 66.
