San Antonio – St. Mary’s University women’s basketball coach Jason Martens announced on Friday the signing of six student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to join the Rattlers starting with the 2009-2010 season. Grand Prairie native Mareta Bailey, San Antonio native Liz Boyd, Rowlett native Sierra Cavitt, Windcrest native Felicia Jacobs, Weslaco native Amber Polvado and Kansas City, Mo., native Kristen Williams will all join the Rattlers next season.

Bailey (5’10”, Jr., Grand Prairie) comes to San Antonio after playing the last two years at Temple College. She was a two-year letterwinner at forward for coach Kim Sebek. Bailey was a two-time all-conference pick, including first team honors as a sophomore. She led the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game, while pulling down 5.5 rebounds and 0.79 blocks per game. Prior to her time at Temple, she was a standout at Bowie High School where she was a two-year letterwinner for coach Wanda Palton. She also earned all-district honors. Bailey is majoring in pre-law at St. Mary’s.

Boyd (5’7″, Fr., San Antonio) was a four-time All-State honoree in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) for coach Breck Ross at Antonian College Preparatory High School. She also was a four-time first team all-district honoree as a guard. Boyd was twice named to the TAPPS all-star game, and was named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Team as a senior. She earned San Antonio Express-News Superteam honors as a senior. With Boyd on the team Antonian advanced to the TAPPS regionals four times and to the TAPPS State Final Four twice. Off the field she was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the Honor Roll. She is undecided on an academic major.

Cavitt (5’11”, Fr., Rowlett) comes to St. Mary’s from Rowlett High School, where she was a three-year letterwinner for coach Ricky Roland. She earned All-District 10-5A honors and was named Offensive Player of the Year as a senior, averaging 10.2 points and 5.8 assists per game. Cavitt helped lead RHS to a District 10-5A playoff appearance as a junior. Off the court she was a Texas Scholar and was accepted into the National Youth Leadership Forum. She plans to major in international business.

Jacobs (5’6″, Fr., San Antonio) was a two-sport standout at guard for coach Rob Rheinberger at Roosevelt High School, lettering in basketball and track and field. She was a two-time all-district honoree and Texas Basketball Magazine All-State honoree. On the track she was an all-district selection. Off the court she was a member of the National Honor Society and was named Academic All-District. She plans to major in exercise and sports science.

Polvado (5’8″, Fr., Weslaco) was a strong all-around athlete at Weslaco High School. She was a four-sport standout at WHS, lettering in basketball, cross country, volleyball and track and field. For coach Griselda Fino’s basketball team she was a three-time All-District 32-5A selection at guard and was the District Defensive MVP as a senior. She averaged 10.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.5 steals. Polvado helped lead Weslaco to three straight playoff appearances, two district titles and an area championship. She was a four-time regional qualifier for the track and field team in the high jump and was also a three-time district champion in the high jump. Off the court she was an Honor Roll member. She plans to major in exercise and sports science.

Williams (5’11”, Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) comes to St. Mary’s after playing the last two years at Moberly Area Community College, where she was a standout guard for coach Katie Vaughn. Williams was named honorable mention All-American after finishing second in the nation in rebounding as a sophomore. She helped lead MACC to a 22-7 record in 2008-2009, averaging 13.3 points and led Region 16 with 12.4 rebounds per game. She hit on 48.6 percent of her shots from the field and made two steals per game. Prior to attending MACC, she was a four-year letterwinner for coach Chris Dawson at Grandview Senior High School. She earned all-conference recognition three times. Williams also lettered in softball and track and field. She was an honorable mention all-conference honoree on the softball diamond. Off the court she was a member of the Honor Roll and the National Honor Society. She is majoring in special education.

St. Mary’s went 24-6 record this season and advanced to their second straight trip to the NCAA South Central Region Tournament. The Rattlers also won their second straight Heartland Conference Championship and posted a 49-11 record over the last two years – the best two-year record in school history.
