San Antonio – Taryn Munoz tossed a three-hit shutout, while Alyssa Alfaro smacked a two-run homerun and drove in four runs, leading St. Mary’s University to a convincing 9-0 victory over Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s Softball Field.

Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) earned her second win in as many days, tossing her second straight complete game shutout. She allowed just three hits and no walks, while striking four. She is now 19-12 on the mound this season. No Dustdevil advanced past second base in the game.

While Munoz was dominating on the mound, the Rattlers offense battered Dustdevil starting pitcher Clarissa Salinas. The barrage started in the second inning as Christina Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) led off with a single and Alfaro (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas) followed with a two-run homerun, her team-best ninth of the season. That keyed a five-run inning and gave Munoz all the support she would need. Lauren Miller (Jr., Baytown, Texas) had a two-run single, while Alfaro sealed the game in the fourth inning with a two-run single, helping the Rattlers to a 9-0 lead.

With the victory, St. Mary’s is now 31-19 overall and 16-5 in Heartland Conference play. TAMIU fell to 20-29, 14-7. The Rattlers finished the regular season in second place in the Heartland Conference standings, one-half game behind St. Edward’s University. The Rattlers will open play in the Heartland Conference Tournament Thursday, April 29, in Austin, Texas. The tournament schedule will be announced later this week.
