SEGUIN, Texas – The St. Mary’s University men’s tennis team had a strong showing in its first event of the season, with numerous players advancing to the final round of their respective championship brackets in Texas Lutheran University’s 1st Annual Doc Skogman Invitational.
Jake Williams, a junior from Dallas, coasted past Texas Lutheran’s Hernandez 6-1, 6-4 to take the championship in the “C” singles bracket Saturday. Freshman Carlos Olea (Matamoros, Mexico) also proved victorious, winning the D bracket by beating Temple College’s Fowler 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, junior Marcin Marczewski (Warsaw, Poland) advanced to the A singles final round, where he was narrowly edged by Our Lady of the Lake’s Rovira by the score of 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (4). Andre Klip, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, took third place after beating Temple College’s Spilman 6-2, 6-2.
In the B finals bracket, Temple College’s Greer-Smith clipped Nestor Moreno (Jr., Bogota, Columbia) 6-2, 6-3. Senior Guy Rutten (Almelo, Netherlands) won third place by edging SU’s Clarage 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Andrew Flores (San Antonio) fell to Temple College’s Martinez in the C third-place match in a walkover, while Sergio Leal (Fr., San Antonio) was edged by Our Lady of the Lake’s Silva 6-3, 6-4 in the D third-place match.
In A Doubles action, St. Mary’s top two squads each advanced to the final round.
