San Antonio – Elizabeth Rubi had two goals and Marcey Morales added three assists as St. Mary’s University rolled to a 4-0 win over Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action Friday afternoon. In volleyball action, the Rattlers fell in four sets to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 25-14, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, at Bill Greehey Arena.
Morales (Sr., Lytle) tied for the second most assists in a single game in school history and now has nine assists, the sixth most for a single season in school history. Rubi (Fr., Fort Worth) tied for the team lead in goals with six. Friday’s game was her first multiple-goal game as a Rattler.
The Rattlers wasted no time in getting on the board first as Amanda McMullan (Sr., Allen) took a long pass from Morales, beat one defender, then slid the ball past goalkeeper Mary Jo Hall for a 1-0 lead just 6:57 into the game. Rubi then struck twice in a three-minute span to turn the game into a runaway and give the Rattlers a 3-0 lead at the half. Ashley Condrin (Fr., Trophy Club) added her second goal of the season in the 66th minute to ice the game.
Roxanna Carrasco (Fr., El Paso) picked up her first shutout as a Rattler and made three saves in goal. Hall faced 22 shots from the Rattlers and made 12 saves, but took the loss.
With the win the Rattlers have won three of their last five games and are 5-12-1 overall, 4-7 in Heartland Conference play. TAMIU fell to 1-18, 0-11. St. Mary’s will wrap up the 2008 regular season when they travel across town to face the University of the Incarnate Word on Sunday at 7 p.m.
In volleyball the Rattlers dropped their fifth straight match, falling to the Javelinas in four sets. Sha Tramble was the standout for TAMUK, picking up 17 kills against just three errors in the match. Amanda Waclawczyk also reached double figures in kills with 10. Victoria Hernandez led the Jav defense with 23 digs.
For the Rattlers Kori McCarver (So., San Antonio) led the offense with eight kills, while Holly Moreno (Fr., Pearland) had seven. Valerie Teter (Sr., San Antonio) had 14 digs to lead the defense.
The Javelinas dominated in winning the first set by a 25-14 score. In the second set the Javelinas continued their strong hitting with 18 kills against just three attack errors in the win. Finally in the third set the Rattlers settled down and rallied from an early deficit to win. In the fourth set the Javelinas took an early 10-3 lead. The Rattlers rallied to pull within four points, but the Javs held on for the win to end the match.
With the loss the Rattlers fell to 8-17 overall, while TAMUK improved to 9-16. The Rattlers will play their final home match of the season on Saturday against Tarleton State University starting at 1 p.m. Prior to the match the Rattlers will receive the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award.
