What is Federal Verification?
Federal Verification is a review process required by the U.S. Department of Education, which mandates that St. Mary’s University confirm the accuracy and completeness of the information provided on a FAFSA and confirm your eligibility to receive financial assistance.
If a student is selected, they must complete the process to be awarded financial aid and to have financial aid paid toward their student account.
Reasons People are Selected for Federal Verification
- There are inconsistencies and/or potential errors on the FAFSA
- They are randomly selected
- The school finds conflicting information on the FAFSA
If selected for Federal Verification, you are required to submit the following:
- Tax documents, depending on the academic year:
- For 2024-2025, submit 2022 tax/income documents
- For 2025-2026, submit 2023 tax/income documents
The following can be submitted as tax documentation:
- In your FAFSA, provide consent to transfer tax information from the IRS with the Future Act Direct Data Exchange (FA-DDX)
- Signed copy of your and/or your parents’ Federal Tax returns and Schedule 1, Schedule 2, and Schedule 3 (if applicable)
- Federal Tax Return Transcript
- Signed foreign tax return
- If you and/or your parents did not file, but did earn income, you will need to submit W2s
- Parents of dependent students and independent students who did not file, must also submit a verification of non-filing from the IRS
If an amended tax return was completed, both the original signed tax return AND the amended return will need to be submitted.
The Identity and Statement of Educational Purpose is another document and process that might be required. If noted in your FAFSA Submission Summary or in your Financial Aid Requirements in Gateway, you have either an in-person or mail-in option:
- In person:
- Present your government-issued photo identification (ID), such as, but not limited to, a driver’s license, other state-issued ID, or passport, AND
- Submit the Identity and Statement of Educational Purpose form (does not require a notary). Our office will provide this to you in-person.
- If you can’t come in-person, you can mail in the items below. We cannot accept this document electronically.
- A copy of your government-issued identification (ID), such as, but not limited to, a driver’s license, other state-issued ID, or passport, AND
- The Identity and Statement of Education Purpose. This allows for a notary option.
What do I do if I am selected?
If you are required to complete the Federal Verification process, you will know you’ve been selected by the following:
- Your FAFSA Submission Summary will indicate you have been selected.
- Our office will also send a letter to your permanent mailing address on file.
- You will view a listing of the associated verification documents in the Financial Aid Requirements section in Gateway, the student portal.
How will I know I have been selected?
For the 2025-2026 academic year, the deadline to submit all required documentation to receive a timely award with all possible funding is June 1, 2025.
What is the verification deadline?
If the data reported on your FAFSA is confirmed, the Office of Financial Assistance can determine your eligibility for financial aid.
If we find differences between the data reported on your FAFSA and the information that you submitted, we must submit corrections to the Department of Education, which will provide us with a new FAFSA transaction. You can monitor your FAFSA verification status on Gateway. You will be notified when your award is ready for review on Gateway.
What happens after verification is complete?
