Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics at St. Mary’s
Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics majors at St. Mary’s University receive excellent preparation for graduate school, professional school or a career in industry. The programs stress the fundamentals of each science, as well as the development of the intellectual skills necessary to apply them. The Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics programs promote a broad-based view of science, provides the analytical tools necessary to tackle problems in many different fields, versatility and prepare students for a wide range of options after graduation.
Majors select a minor from one of the degrees offered within the School of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Facilities and Equipment
Housed in Garni Science Hall, the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics laboratories accommodate both leading-edge research and intensive educational instruction.
Chemical instrumentation in the Department includes chromatography, spectroscopy and electrochemistry equipment.
Research Opportunities

Chemistry and Biochemistry majors are encouraged to seek summer research opportunities after their sophomore year. Many programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health are available.
Past students have participated in such programs at NASA as well as at universities and medical centers throughout the United States.
St. Mary’s also has programs designed to encourage women and minorities to consider research careers in the health fields, such as the Minority Access to Research Careers and the Undergraduate Research Office. Students are highly encouraged to participate in student leadership opportunities such as the American Chemical Society of Students, undergraduate research, work-study and community service opportunities.
Majors

Applied Physics
Applied Physics provides an instructional base in physics, engineering, mathematics and computer applications. Graduates are prepared to enter today’s high-technology marketplace.

Biochemistry
The Biochemistry program at St. Mary’s University introduces students to the chemistry of living organisms and prepares them for medical, dental, veterinary and allied health schools, as well as graduate programs in biochemistry, molecular biology or pharmacy, or careers in biochemistry and biotechnology.

Chemistry
The Chemistry program at St. Mary’s University gives students unique insights into areas that are central to biology, geology, material science, medicine, environmental science and various branches of engineering.

Forensic Science
The Forensic Science program gives students a comprehensive foundation in the natural and physical sciences, criminology and professional ethics.

Physics
Physics prepares students with a broad-based view of science, as well as the analytical tools necessary to tackle problems in many different fields.

Live and Learn Together
Many of our students live in the Science Living Community, a residence hall dedicated to students who are majoring in the sciences. In this community, students live down the hall from their classmates studying similar subjects and have tutors available in the dorm for some math and science courses.
This community partners with the School of Science, Engineering and Technology to host programs throughout the academic year and invites faculty to visit the halls and share their passion and experiences.
