These questions and more were discussed as the Harvey Najim Center for Business Innovation and Social Responsibility at St. Mary’s University presented “B Corps: Ethics, Responsibility and Implementation,” a learning and social event for the legal, business and student communities, on Friday, Jan. 17.
The event, held at Geekdom, started with Suz Burroughs, Director of the Najim Center, giving an overview of the past and future of corporate responsibility, social entrepreneurship and consumer expectations. Rey Valencia, Associate Dean of the St Mary’s University School of Law, spoke about the B Corps program, the ethics of stakeholder responsibility and other social enterprise structures.
There also was a brief panel featuring other mission-driven business models. Panelists included:
- Lorenzo Gomez of the 80/20 Foundation
- Meghan Garza-Oswald of Community Housing Resource Partners, Inc.
- Raul P. Lomeli-Azoubel and Daniela Perez of SABEResPODER
- Zac Harris of Monk’s Toolbox
Afterward, there was a cocktail hour hosted by Monk’s Toolbox that featured a B Corps beer tasting, fresh local/organic snacks and B Corps giveaways.
