Special Programs in the School of Science, Engineering and Technology

To enhance student learning and opportunities, the St. Mary’s University School of Science, Engineering and Technology offers several programs to assist students in achieving their educational and career goals. These include academic enhancement as well as experiential learning opportunities that will better prepare our students for meeting the challenges they will face in graduate school, in professional school or in their future careers.


Biaggini Research Program 

This endowed program supports the Biaggini Research Scholars, which provides scholarships to high-achieving junior and senior biology majors. Recipients actively participate in faculty-led research projects and are provided travel grants to present their findings at national conferences.

Pre-Health Professional Programs 

St. Mary’s offers comprehensive pre-health professional pathways for students aiming for careers in health care. Students can pursue admission into various cooperative partnership programs, including those in the medical, dental, pharmacy and public health fields.


Spring Research Fellowship (SRF)

The Spring Research Fellowship (SRF) program provides freshmen and sophomores with hands-on research experience and mentorship with a St. Mary’s faculty member during the spring semester. Students selected will research for at least 100 hours and receive a stipend. Those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. are strongly encouraged to apply. To be eligible for the program, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, pursue a course of study in the School of Science, Engineering and Technology or Behavioral Science and be interested in research.


NSF LSAMP Program

The purpose of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program is to help increase diversity in the STEM workforce by increasing the number of baccalaureate and graduate degrees produced in the nation.

Engineering Senior Design Projects

The Engineering senior design project at St. Mary’s is a comprehensive, two-semester capstone experience where students work in interdisciplinary teams to solve real-world, open-ended problems submitted by industrial sponsors.  The end product is a professional report and presentations given before students, faculty, industrial panelists and the sponsoring organization.


McNair Scholars

The McNair Scholars Program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. This program seeks to help first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students of any major to apply to and succeed in doctoral programs.

Research Showcase

Research Showcase is an annual event at St. Mary’s that celebrates the research-based achievements of our undergraduates, graduates, faculty and staff as part of National Research Week.  

Presenters at the Research Showcase display an assortment of projects, including scientific investigations, analytical reviews or projects, innovations/inventions, honors theses, senior projects and original works of art, media, poetry or writing. The event is open to everyone.
