SpanishThe Spanish Language Program at St. Mary's University is one of the oldest at the University. Its roots come from the international education character of the Marianist Order, which has schools and universities not only throughout the United States, but in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The Department offers the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish with or without Texas State Teaching Certification. The program consists of 128 Semester Hours with approximately sixty-nine (69) semester hours dedicated to the Core Curriculum and thirty (30) semester hours dedicated to the major. The remaining hours are split between a minor, or minors and electives. A description of the program follows: Core CurriculumThe Core Curriculum is designed to provide the students with the necessary educational foundations which mark the person as "educated." It is divided into five "general" knowledge areas: Fine Arts; Science and Mathematics; Social Sciences; Synoptic Studies and Communications. All Spanish Majors are guided in their choice of subjects within the core by their assigned faculty advisor within the department. MajorThe Major consists of thirty semester hours. The base course is the Second Year (Intermediate) Course (Sp2311/12). The remaining hours are conducted in 3000-5000 numbered courses consisting of Advanced Communication Skills, Culture and Civilization of Spain and Latin America and literature of both Spain and Latin America. A successful teacher practicum is required. All Teacher Certification students are required to meet the standards prescribed by the State of Texas. The Languages Department works closely with the Teacher Education Department to ensure that the language majors meet those standards. All Spanish majors are strongly encouraged to participate in the Semester in Spain program. International ExperienceSt. Mary's University has a spring semester at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares outside of Madrid, Spain. Part of the program was designed to give prospective teachers a cultural experience. All Teacher Certification students are encouraged to participate in the Spain Semester abroad. Graduate and Law SchoolGraduates of the St. Mary's Spanish Language program have gone on to Graduate Schooling at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Purdue University, the University of Indiana, Bowling Green University, Texas A & M University and the Texas A & M University at Kingsville. In addition, several graduates have attended the St. Mary's University Law School. MOS Program
