Bringing Scripture to Lifeby Kathy Khattar Villarreal
George Montague began publishing “The Montague Press” for family and neighbors in his hometown when he was 11 years old. Four years later, his newspaper had 600 subscribers. When Montague was 16 though, the course of this writer-to-be changed, or so he believed at the time. He entered the Society of Mary and professed his first vows in 1947. After completing his undergraduate work at the University of Dayton, he taught at high schools in Missouri and Wisconsin. But the writing never stopped. Today, the Rev. George Montague, Scripture scholar and popular teacher of the Bible, is the author of 17 books. From 1961 to 1972, while teaching theology at St. Mary’s, Montague attended meetings of a prayer group whose members “spoke in tongues.” “[In] 1970, friends prayed over me for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and from that point on, my life changed,” he says. Montague left St. Mary’s in 1972 and his work has taken him to six continents for lectures, conferences and retreat tours, in addition to missionary duties in Nepal and India. He returned in 1990. “What is most rewarding about being here is teaching, especially undergraduate students who are in search of life values,” he says. Montague co-founded the St. Mary’s Catholic Charismatic Bible Institute, where he seeks to present “the word” in the context of a living community. And, as co-director of the Marianist Forum, he strives to share the Marianist spirit, traditions and values. Profile appeared in Spring 1993 issue of Gold & Blue.
The Rev. George Montague, S.M., Professor of Theology, has been a Marianist for 55 years. |
