Welcome to the fall 2009 semester. All courses (unless indicated otherwise on your schedule) will be conducted in our building at 251 W. Ligustrum. For information about important dates during this semester, refer to the Counseling and Human Services Calendar of Events for the Fall of 2009.
Some initial important notices are as follows:
- Master's level Community Counseling students who entered the program prior to July 1, who have obtained 12 or less hours of credit, and who do not want their program of study changed to the 54-hour Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree program should talk with Dr. Wooten. Students who meet these requirements and who fail to request remaining in their original program of study will have their program of study automatically changed.
- Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral students who are enrolled in a special practicum or internship course and who want to be able to see clients at the Family Life Center (FLC) should contact Dr. Laura Bryan, Clinical Administrator, to become oriented to the policies, procedures, and software in the Family Life Center (FLC). Orientation is required prior to your being allowed to see clients at the FLC. You can reach Dr. Bryan in room 205 of the FLC, at lbryan@stmarytx.edu, or by phone at 210-438-6401.
Registration for the master's counseling practicum and internship courses now requires permission from the internship coordinator, Dr. Harper. This is being done to more closely track students' practicum and internship plans and to make sure students have chosen sites where adequate supervised hours can be obtained and appropriate developmental opportunities are available.
If you would like to register for counseling internship for the spring 2010 semester, submit to Dr. Harper completed copies of the Practicum/Internship Application form, Supervision Agreement form without your university supervisor's name and signature, your learning goals for the upcoming semester's clinical experiences, and proof of liability insurance. If the offsite supervisor is a new site supervisor, the supervisor also must complete the St. Mary's University Sexual Harassment Policy Statement form and submit a resume or vita.
If you are planning to take counseling practicum in the spring, you will need to choose a site where you can obtain most (or all, for distance students) of the required 40 hours of direct client contact. Students taking classes on campus will be expected to perform some individual counseling in the Family Life Center, where sessions are recorded and client case notes can be reviewed. Students should not expect to obtain all of their direct client contact hours from the Family Life Center. On average, students can obtain between 5 and 15 hours of direct client contact from the Family Life Center.
If you are taking classes on campus and want to register for counseling practicum, you will need to submit to Dr. Harper completed copies of the Practicum/Internship Application form, Supervision Agreement form without your university supervisor's name and signature, and your learning goals for the upcoming semester's clinical experiences. You also will need to complete the Family Life Center Orientation and associated tasks, such as submitting documented proof of liability insurance to Dr. Bryan. If the offsite supervisor is a new site supervisor, the supervisor also must complete the St. Mary's University Sexual Harassment Policy Statement form and submit a resume or vita
