The MFT Program will be welcoming Dr. Jason Northrup
to its faculty in the spring of 2013. Dr. Northrup earned his doctoral degree at Texas Tech University and he has been on faculty at Texas A & M-Central Texas. Welcome, Dr. Northrup!
Please join the faculty in congratulating Dr. Laura Bryan on her new position as Clinical Director of Marriage and Family Therapy at Pfeiffer University in Raleigh, NC. It is with great sadness, as well as happiness, that we share the news of this new opportunity for Laura to move forward in her professional career. Dr. Bryan has been a dedicated and trustworthy contributor to the department, and all aspects of its functions. We wish her well in her new position.
As a requirement of CACREP accreditation, we must stop offering the Community Counseling program by December 2012. Students currently in this program are required to either complete the Community Counseling degree by December 2012 or transfer into the current Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. If you want to transfer into the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, please see Mr. Francis Farrell to request a change of major.
Welcome to the Fall 2012 semester! During Fall 2012, all courses (unless indicated otherwise on your schedule) will be conducted in our building at 251 W. Ligustrum. Please review the calendar of events for the fall 2012 semester to see if there are deadlines that you must meet during this semester.
On behalf of the Counseling and Human Services Department, students preparing to take the National Counselor Exam (NCE) this fall semester are invited to attend The Wellspring Review. The purpose of this review is to prepare you for your state examination so you can become a Licensed Professional Counselor. The Wellspring Review will be conducted on August 25, 2012 at 251 W. Ligustrum from 9:30am-6:00pm with a one hour lunch. Please sign up with Stephanie, Francis, Lilly, or Monique via phone or email. Students must attend the whole day in order to receive the review manual for the exam. Anyone who leaves the course early will be noted and expected to leave the manual with the instructor.
Each semester, a supervision agreement form and proof of liability insurance are required for each student enrolling in an internship or counseling practicum course. In addition, counseling master's students are required to submit a CMHC application form and CES doctoral students are required to submit a CES application form for practicum and internship prior to being allowed to register for a practicum or internship course. Additionally, students interested in special practica (Advanced Clinical, Supervision, Neurofeedback, Social Justice, Play Therapy Practica) must submit an Application for CES Practica and Specialized CMHC Practica prior to course registration. If your site supervisor has not supervised St. Mary's University students in awhile, you may also be required to obtain a resume or vita and a signed St. Mary's University Sexual Harassment Policy Statement form from your supervisor. MFT students should submit forms to Dr. Ratliff, and counseling students should submit forms to Dr. Harper.
Please note: The application form for practicum and internship has changed. Each program's forms are available in Downloadable Forms.
Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral students who are enrolled in a special practicum or internship course and who want to be able to see clients at the Family Life Center (FLC) should contact Dr. Laura Bryan, Clinical Administrator, to become oriented to the policies, procedures, and software in the Family Life Center (FLC). Orientation is available online and is required prior to your being allowed to see clients at the FLC. You can reach Dr. Bryan in room 205 of the FLC, at lbryan@stmarytx.edu, or by phone at 210-438-6401.
Doctoral students are now required to submit their final dissertation in both paper form (two copies) and electronic .pdf form. Please refer to the Information Regarding Electronic Submission of Dissertations for instructions on how to submit paper copies and electronic copies of final dissertations. This information will be added as an addendum to the Dissertation Manual.

The Graduate School of St. Mary's University announces the final examination of Marisela Escarcega for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at the Counselor Education and Family Life Center, 251 W. Mudge, Ph.D. Dissertation Topic: "The Relationship Between Parent's Acculturation and Children's Depressive Symptoms Among Mexican American Children of Low Socio-Economic Status."

- The The Association for Specialists in Group Work invites applicants for the $2000 scholarship given annually to honor Marguerite "Peg" Carroll, former ASGW President and pioneer in group work. All nominations must be submitted by January 31, 2013.

- The The International Association for Addictions and Offender Counselors is pleased to announce the call for nominations for three awards and applications for our annual research grant. All nominations must be submitted by February 15, 2013.
- The Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development is pleased to announce the nomination process for a wide variety of awards. All nominations must be submitted by January 31, 2013.
- The Association for Adult Development and Aging (AADA) Research grant call for proposals. Award given is $500 each to one professional and one graduate student. Applications are due January 15, 2013.
- Association for Creativity in Counseling (ACC) Helping to Explore Creativity in Counseling grant call for proposals. Award given is $250 each to one professional and one graduate student. Applications are due January 15, 2013.
- Association for Humanistic Counseling (AHC) Make a Difference Grant call for proposals. Award given is $750. Open to all graduate students. Applications are due January 10, 2013.
- Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Research Grant Award call for proposals. Maximum award given is $2000. Open to professional and student members of ACES. Applications are due September 4, 2012.
- The South Texas Counseling Association awards graduate and/or doctoral students with scholarships. The scholarships are given bi-annually and are for the amount of $500. The deadlines for this scholarship are January 1 for the winter and April 10 for the May scholarships.
- The San Antonio American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers scholarships to assist women to complete a graduate degree. The scholarships are $2,000 each to one or more applicants. Textbook scholarships also are awarded to female undergraduate and graduate students. The deadline for these scholarships in 2012 was February 11, 2012.
- The International Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors (IAAOC) usually awards a research grant to a member each spring. Deadlines for application usually are in early February.
- The Association for Creativity in Counseling usually awards research $250 research grants to student members. The purpose of these awards is to support research that increases understanding of the use of creativity in counseling. The deadline for submissions for these grants usually is at the end of November.
- The American Counseling Association Foundation sponsors annual graduate student essay competitions for scholarships and annual graduate student ethics competitionsfor ACA bookstore gift certificates. Both of these competitions usually are opened in October and closed in November.
- The American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) is holding a competition open to anyone who has completed a dissertation that focuses on Hispanic(s) in higher education or to any Hispanic individual who has completed a dissertation in the social sciences, broadly defined, between December 2009 and August 1, 2012. The top three winners will be invited and sponsored to attend the Annual AAHHE National Conference to present their dissertation and receive their award. The first place winner will receive an award of $5,000, the second place winner will receive $2,000, and the third place winner will receive $1,000.
The deadline for submitting an application for one of these awards is August 24, 2012.
- Texas Association for Play Therapy offers $500 Dan E. Homeyer Research Grants twice a year to students and faculty members at Texas colleges and universities. The deadlines for submitting an application for one of these awards are October 1 and March 1.
- The National Board of Certified Counselors Foundation awards Rural Scholarships and Military Scholarships to students in a CACREP-accredited master's degree program. The Rural Scholarships are for students who plan to practice in a rural setting, and the Military Scholarships are for students who previously served in the military and plan to provide services to members of the military or veterans. The amount of each scholarship is $5,000. The deadline for this scholarship is November 1, 2012.
- The The Law and Society Association, in collaboration with the American Bar Foundation and the National Science Foundation provides $27,000 stipends for 12 months to doctoral students in social sciences programs who are planning to perform empirically-based dissertation research on topics related to law and inequality. The deadlines for submitting an application for this fellowship usually is in mid-December.

- Winona State University Counselor Education Department, and St. Cloud State University Education Leadership and Community Psychology Department, are offering an excellent multicultural immersion experience in Guatemala City and Antigua, Guatemala from April 12, 2013 to June 10, 2013 that includes. - Old Dominion University offers study abroad institutes for counselors and counseling students in Italy and Ireland. Each institute lasts from 9 days to two weeks.
- The International Committee of Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes (ICASSI) presents their 46th Rudolf Dreikurs Summer Institute, held in Waganingen, Netherlands from 7/21/2013-8/03/2013. - George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia is offering an exciting study abroad experience in Alajuela, Costa Rica from July 7th, 2012 through July 28th, 2012 that includes 2 weeks of Spanish language classes culminating in a 1 week mini-internship in a school or social service/community agency setting. - Army OneSource now has four (4) FREE online courses available under the "Treating the Invisible Wounds of War" Series. This is an opportunity for you to continue your education and gain additional knowledge about the challenges that our Soldiers and their Families face before, during and deployment. They are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Issues of Women Returning from Combat, and Recognizing Sights and Sounds of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.
- The Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health periodically hosts free (unless otherwise noted) seminars on topics relevant to counseling and marriage and family therapy. There usually is a charge only if you want documented CEUs for attending these workshops. Registration is required, and the workshops often reach maximum capacity. The Center usually serves a free lunch, so indicate your preference (usual options are turkey, ham, or veggie) when you register. The end of semester party, member initiation, and officer installation event was held on Sunday, 4/29/2012. - The ACCis pleased to request submissions for the 2013 Spring newsletter. ACC is soliciting submissions that embody creativity in counseling as well as important member information and updates. Suggestions include: Creative mental health interventions, poetry, pictures, calendar events of importance, and creativity in supervision training. The submission deadline is December 15, 2012. - Journal of Creativity in Mental Health is promoting graduate student scholarship by sponsoring an upcoming graduate student issue. - Counselling and Psychotherapy Research calls for Expressions of Interest Special Section - Counselling and Psychotherapy with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning/Queer (LGBTQ) Young People. All proposals must be sent as an email attachment to either of the guest editors, Dr. Markus Bidell, (mbidell@hunter.cuy.edu) or Dr. David Mair, (d.j.mair@bham.ac.uk), deadline December 21, 2012.
- Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (VACES) has funded a call for techniques, intervention, and group topics towards substance use therapy to be composed in an accessible resource for counselors to use in their practice. Professional credit will be given to contributors of techniques included in the resource. Submissions are due October 1, 2012. Please reploy to this post or email your ideas to emhond@email.wm.edu. - The Journal for International Counselor Education (JICE) is seeking contributions for a special issue: International Perspectives on Child & Adolescent Counseling. JICE is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that promotes professional counselor education, preparation, training, and supervision of counselors internationally. In order to be considered, artlices must be submitted by September 30, 2012. All manuscripts will undergo full peer review-submission of a manuscript does not guarantee acceptance. - Chi Sigma Iota's newsletter, The CSI Exemplar, will feature three new columns: Where Are They Now?, Professional Counselor's Corner, and Survivor to Thriver.
Where Are They Now? will highlight the current activities of previous CSI award winners or Chapter Officers. Such a column provides a win/win as it supports the benefit of CSI membership while sharing real world experiences in the field for professionals. If you were a CSI award recipient or Chapter Officer, you can submit a 300 - 500 word article about how your involvement with CSI has influenced your career in the counseling profession and what you are doing today. Professional Counselor s Corner will highlight current trends in counseling practice such as methods and techniques that others find effective through research and/or practice. It portrays what practitioners and researchers are doing in the field of counseling. You can submit a 300 - 750 word article outlining some innovation, knowledge, or information suitable for both beginning and seasoned counselors. Survivor to Thriver will provide strength based wellness tips for managing multiple responsibilities and stressors to be a successful leader (e.g. relaxation exercises, time-management strategies, organization strategies, etc.) You can submit a 300 - 750 word article sharing strategies that encourage growth and wellness. In addition to these features, they also welcome ideas for other feature articles that you feel would be beneficial for members. Please note that submissions may be accepted, submitted for revision, edited or rejected as the case may require. - Visions, the American College Counseling Association (ACCA) newsletter, encourages submissions on topics that may be beneficial to graduate students. Questions and submissions can be submitted to dpaladino@rollins.edu.
- The Family Digest, the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors newsletter, contains a Graduate Student Column. The Family Digest is published three times each year.
- The new Graduate Research Journal has been announced and is inviting students to submit manuscripts for publication. This journal is a peer-reviewed, international, open-access, online publication of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling at Sam Houston State University that focuses on issues related to educational leadership and counseling. First authors on all submitted manuscripts must be current graduate students or recent graduates. Graduate students also may participate as GRJ reviewers and serve on the GRJ editorial board.
These are research study opportunities for our St. Mary's University students. The requests that are being forwarded to us are without the requirement that the researchers obtain IRB approval from St. Mary's University. However, the researchers have indicated that they have received IRB approval from their own institutions.
- Hongryun Woo, a doctoral student in the Counselor Education & Supervision program at the University of Iowa, is conducting a research study exploring career intentions in academia among doctoral students in counselor education programs. The study is looking for doctoral students who are current, full-time equivalent doctoral students in counselor education programs. If you choose to participate, you will be asked to fill out a series of survey questions related to your post-graduate career plans. In addition, you will be asked to provide demographic information about yourself and your background. If you are interested in participating, please follow the web link below to begin the on-line survey. You will be asked to read additional information about the study before accessing the survey. - Dr. Kerrie Feniran of the University of North Texas is seeking graduate students regarding participation in the Texas Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (TACES). The following information is provided to help you decide whether you wish to participate in this research study:
--The purpose of this study is to solicit feedback to better able the Texas Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (TACES; a division of the Texas Counseling Association) to meet your needs as a counseling graduate student. Your participation will entail filling out a brief internet survey. You are free to decide not to participate or to withdraw your participation at any time. The survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.
--There are no known risks associated with this study. The expected benefit associated with your participation is that TACES will be better able to meet your needs for support and professional development as a counseling graduate student.
--Your responses will not be used to identify you or your institution and will be kept, along with all research records, confidential by the Principal Investigator. No individual responses will be disclosed to anyone because all data will be reported on a group basis. Your information and/or email address will not be released, unless you give us permission to do so. - Drs. Rosanne Keathley, Richard Henriksen, and Judy Nelson of Sam Houston State University are conducting a study on the lived experiences of mothers of alcoholic children. They are looking for participants who are willing to be interviewed by phone, via SKYPE, or in person for about an hour regarding the experiences of being the mother of an alcoholic son or daughter. A follow up interview of 15 or 20 minutes may also be a part of the study. Participants identities will remain anonymous in any subsequent manuscripts or training elicited from the study. This study has been reviewed and approved by the Internal Review Board at Sam Houston State University. Interested participants should contact Dr. Judy Nelson.
- A doctoral candidate in Counseling Education and Supervision at Penn State University is conducting her dissertation research about the identities of Mexican American women who are students in CACREP-accredited CES doctoral programs in Texas. This study is being conducted for research purposes. In conducting this research, she aims to provide insight about the cultural characteristics of both CES doctoral programs and Mexican American women that impact the identities of Mexican American women doctoral students. Her goal is that this information will facilitate development of strategies that will increase the number of Mexican American women in the CES profession. Mexican American women who participate in this study will be asked to meet for confidential individual interviews that will last 60-90 minutes. She is seeking participants who are Mexican American women, who were born in the United States, and who are currently in CES, CACREP-accredited doctoral programs. - Elizabeth A. Prosek invites participants for a research study entitled Diagnosis and the Clinical Decision Making Process (IRB-approved). This study is a mixed methods design conducted via a secure Internet website. Participation requires counselors and counselor trainees to view a mock client video, assign a clinical diagnosis using the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders-Text Revision (DSM; American Psychiatric Association, 2000), answer open-ended interview questions, and rank-order survey questions. Participation will take an estimated 45-60 minutes. The researcher understands this is a significant time commitment for a research study; however it is important to investigate this topic among the counseling profession. Weekly lottery incentives are available as appreciation for your time commitment.
You are eligible for this research study if you are a counselor or student in a counseling program. If you are interested, please click on the link provided. You will be linked to an informed consent document. After reading the informed consent document you may choose to participate or not participate in the study. It will be helpful to have your DSM IV available and a space you can work in for about 45 minutes before you begin the survey.
