San Antonio – The St. Mary’s University women’s soccer team posted its second straight shutout to start the season, while the men’s soccer team won its first game in collegiate soccer action Friday afternoon. The volleyball team fell to Lynn University at the Rollins College Invitational.
The women’s soccer team overcame field conditions that made play difficult at best. A storm cell rolled through San Antonio earlier in the day, dropping several inches of rain on the St. Mary’s Soccer Field. The conditions created a slow pace to the game and neither team had many strong scoring opportunities, though the Rattlers held the ball for most of the game. After a scoreless first half the Rattlers finally broke through in the 65th minute. Marcey Morales (Jr., Lytle) sent a corner kick into the box. After the ball was batted around Elizabeth Hoffman (Jr., Plano) sent a short pass to Deann Lopez (Sr., El Paso), who put it past Wildcat goalkeeper Paige Farmer, for the only goal of the game.
Carisa Trousdale (Fr., Baytown) and Jamie Montero (Fr., Iowa Park) combined on the shutout, the second straight for the Rattlers to start the season. The Rattlers are now 2-0 on the season, while ACU is 2-1 in their first season of collegiate competition. St. Mary’s will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Portales, N.M., to face Eastern New Mexico University at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The men’s soccer team took a more difficult road to victory on Friday. After traveling to Portales, N.M., the Rattlers found themselves behind by a goal at the half, despite outshooting the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs 8-3. Bryan Stoeber put UCCS up in the seventh minute with his goal.
But the Rattlers wasted little time in taking command in the second half. In the 54th minute Kris Sumter (Sr., San Antonio) put a free kick around the UCCS wall and into the net for his second goal of the season to tie things at 1-1. Then the Rattlers took the lead for good when David Peterson (Fr., Saginaw) took a cross from Scott Kilpatrick (Sr., Converse) and beat UCCS goalkeeper Mark Howard for the go-ahead goal. The score was the first of Peterson’s Rattler career.
The Rattlers continued their domination statistically in the match, outshooting UCCS 15-5. Brett Collier (So., Schertz) picked up the win in goal. St. Mary’s improved to 1-1. They will face Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Portales, N.M.
After a strong first game in which they took Lynn University to the limit, the Rattlers suffered from a power outage over the final two games and dropped a 30-27, 30-20, 30-16, decision. In game one the Rattlers hit .324, posting 16 kills against just five errors. But Lynn was even better, hitting 18 kills against no errors for a .474 attack percentage. The Rattlers posted just 10 kills the rest of the match as Lynn picked up the win.
Samantha Weber (Sr., Fort Lupton, Colo.) led the way with 10 kills, while Stephanie Crowell (So., The Woodlands) had six hits. Valerie Teter (Jr., San Antonio) led the way defensively with 12 digs. The Rattlers fell to 2-3 this season, while Lynn improved to 3-2. St. Mary’s will face Barry University (Fla.) at 10 a.m., and then take on host Rollins College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
