Biography

Emily Lacy, Ph.D, specializes in aesthetics and the philosophy of art. Before turning to philosophy, she majored in painting, a background that continues to inform her work on art interpretation and criticism. Lacy holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Illinois Chicago, where her dissertation, The Role of Interpretation in Art Criticism, developed an account of interpretation as a frame that shapes audience experience.

Her teaching and research explore how aesthetic engagement intersects with interpretation, ethics and feminist thought. Before entering academia, she taught middle school reading and writing in the Houston public school system, an experience that continues to influence her inclusive and student-centered approach to philosophy instruction. She has since taught a range of courses, including Philosophy of Art, Love and Sex, Formal Logic and Biomedical Ethics. Lacy has also presented her work at meetings of the American Society for Aesthetics.
