Biography

Mary Whiting, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling at St. Mary’s University and an Owner and Licensed Professional Counselor at Every Good Gift Counseling, as well as a Nationally Certified Counselor. Her research focuses on multicultural populations with an emphasis on the intersection of religion, spirituality and mental health services. She is committed to advancing culturally responsive counseling practices and breaking down barriers that prohibit help-seeking among these populations.

Whiting has presented her research at numerous local, national and international conferences. Her research has been supported by multiple grants and awards, including recognition from the Association for Spiritual, Ethical and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) and the Texas Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (TACES). She has contributed to significant research on frameworks for treating sex-trafficking clients through her work with the Counselors Against Sex Trafficking (CAST) Lab at UTSA. She currently serves as the Secretary for ASERVIC division of American Counseling Association (ACA) and as a conference presentation reviewer for several regional and national counseling and counselor educator organizations.

Both a passionate advocate and leader, Whiting has been a foster parent to 16 children in Texas and Pennsylvania, helped with national organization’s including RAINN, Helping Hands, Just Serve and Light the World Giving Machines as well as engaged in many instances of service to the community including Hurricane Harvey Clean Up Efforts and Texas Community Recovery and Crisis Clean Up for the Kerrville Flood Relief efforts.
