Hannibal Lokumbe, Will Kennedy headline April 24-25 event

Enjoy the sounds of great national, regional and local jazz artists this Fiesta season at the 53rd annual Fiesta Jazz Festival at St. Mary’s University – just a week after Oyster Bake.

Award-winning trumpeter and composer Hannibal Lokumbe and acclaimed drummer Will Kennedy are this year’s special guest artists.

The St. Mary’s Music Department, the San Antonio Fiesta Commission and KRTU 91.7 FM are sponsoring the event, one of the oldest jazz festivals in the nation. Friday’s concerts will begin at 1 p.m. in Pecan Grove with performances by musicians from St. Mary’s, the University of the Incarnate Word and the Alamo Colleges.

1-6 p.m. – University Invitational
6-7 p.m. – Adrian Ruiz Quintet
7-8 p.m. – Will Kennedy with the St. Mary’s jazz faculty
8:30-10 p.m. – Hannibal Lokumbe and The Music Liberation Orchestra

On Saturday, April 25, the Fiesta Jazz Band Festival will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in both the University Center and Treadaway Recital Hall. This event will showcase more than 30 Texas middle and high school jazz ensembles. Participants perform in front of a panel of jazz clinicians, with trophies awarded for outstanding performances and jazz clinics held throughout the day.

Lokumbe and Kennedy will hold a clinic at noon in the University Center. A performance by the Jazz Orchestra of San Antonio will be the finale.
