ABILENE, Texas – The new-look St. Mary’s men’s golf team is looking good after Day 1 of Abilene Christian’s Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate.
The Rattlers are in second place heading into Tuesday’s final round, as Shawn Bennett posted one of the best rounds of his career with an opening-round 69 Monday.
Bennett, a junior from Marion, Texas, is tied for seventh place five shots behind tournament leader Alex Carpenter of Abilene Christian.
Equally impressive for the Rattlers is Alex Bissaro (Fr., San Antonio), the younger brother of Rattlers softball pitcher Maricela Bissaro (Jr., San Antonio), who carded a 71 to sit in a tie for 14th place.
Matthew Van Winkle (So., Castroville, Texas) is in 19th place after shooting a 72 for the Rattlers, who shot 285 as a team to trail Abilene Christian by 15 strokes entering Tuesday’s second and final round. The tournament features a 14-team field.
