AMARILLO, Texas – The Rattlers are in prime position to capture their first tournament championship of the season.

The St. Mary’s men’s golf team is one shot off the lead entering today’s third and final round of the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational, where Rattler freshman Kirby Gorzell is in fourth place individually as well.

Gorzell (San Antonio) shot a 3-under-par 139 over the first two rounds, leaving him five behind leader Jose A. Hernandez of St. Edward’s. Colorado State-Pueblo leads the team standings with a score of 569, just a tick better than the 570 the Rattlers posted on the opening day Monday.

Matthew Van Winkle (So., Castroville, Texas) is tied for 20th at 144 while Alex Bissaro (Fr., San Antonio) shot a 145 to put him in a tie for 25th place. Chris Contreras (Jr., San Antonio) and Shawn Bennett (Jr., Marion, Texas) also had strong days, posting scores of 146 and 148, respectively.
