San Antonio – Stop us if you’ve heard this before: St. Mary’s big man Kevin Kotzur has been named the Heartland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Kotzur, the 6-foot-8 forward/center from La Vernia, Texas, was awarded the honor for the fifth time this season, with the latest being announced by the league Monday.

The junior scored 28 points on 13-of-15 shooting in the Rattlers’ lone appearance last week, a 10-point victory over top-seeded Texas A&M International. Kotzur also hauled in nine rebounds in the game.

Now the only question is: Will the Heartland Conference’s most decorated player this season also take home Player of the Year honors later this week?

Kotzur has taken home five of the 14 Player of the Week honors, with no other player winning the award more than twice. He also leads the conference in rebounding (8.6 per game), is second in scoring (17.7 points per game) and leads the league in field-goal percentage (64.7 percent). His Rattlers also possess the second-best record in the league, only a single game behind conference-leading TAMIU.

Kotzur ranks No. 9 on the Rattlers’ all-time scoring list with 1,395 career points and is No. 4 on the all-time rebounding list with 687 boards.

The Rattlers (17-8, 10-4 in Heartland) will play Newman in the Heartland Conference Tournament semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Laredo, Texas. The winner will move on to the championship game, slated for 4 p.m. Saturday.
