San Antonio – No pitcher in the country has maintained an ERA as low as St. Mary’s ace Carl O’Neal through as many innings he has pitched.

The junior from Clark High School in San Antonio has maintained a 0.53 ERA over 50.7 innings, unsurprisingly going 8-0 over his eight appearances.

And now, for the second time this year, O’Neal has been named the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

O’Neal, who won a national Player of the Week award as well earlier in the year, kept alive his fantastic start to the 2012 season with a complete-game shutout of Newman over the weekend. He struck out 10 and yielded just four hits in the game, completing his fourth shutout in eight starts.

O’Neal has helped St. Mary’s pitching staff compile a 2.14 ERA for the season, which ranks third among all NCAA Division II schools.

The Rattlers (25-5) were tied for No. 2 in the nation in last week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America national poll. The new rankings should be released today
