San Antonio – First, the No. 1-ranked St. Mary’s Rattlers baseball team won its “Battle of the Saints” series over the weekend to clinch the Heartland Conference regular-season title.

Now, they’ve swept the Heartland Conference’s weekly awards.

Slugger Brandon Bates was named the league’s Hitter of the Week while Derek Moczygemba won Pitcher of the Week honors, the Heartland Conference announced Monday.

Moczygemba, a junior from Bulverde, Texas, had a stellar showing against nationally ranked Texas A&M Kingsville in a non-conference 10-0 win, striking out nine batters in a complete-game shutout. He scattered four hits in the game, improving to 5-2 on the season to win Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.

Meanwhile, Bates, a junior from Boerne, Texas, won his first Hitter of the Week award after hitting .313 with four RBIs and two runs scored last week. His week included a triple and a double, as St. Mary’s went 3-1 against Texas A&M-Kingsville and St. Edward’s.

The Rattlers (38-8, 28-5 in Heartland Conference) will head to Laredo, Texas for a three-game series against Texas A&M International this weekend.
