San Antonio – The St. Mary’s softball team enjoyed a resurgence last week, sweeping Abilene Christian with a pair of convincing victories.

And on Monday, two of the Lady Rattlers’ star players were honored for their success.

Third baseman Chelsea Wenske and Pitcher Emily Brittain were named the Heartland Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference announced.

Wenske, a senior from Victoria, Texas, had a fabulous series against Abilene Christian, going 6 for 6 with five RBIs and two runs scored to help lead St. Mary’s to two victories. For the week, she hit .400 over five games, while also recording 17 putouts with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Brittain, a freshman from Corpus Christi, Texas, pitched a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts in a 5-0 victory over the Wildcats, yielding just three hits in the contest. For the week, she totaled 19 strikeouts, going 1-2 with a 1.15 ERA while pitching two complete games over four appearances.

St. Mary’s is 11-9 and hosts Angelo State in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
