DENTON, Texas – Riding the waves of their victory over the nation’s top-ranked team earlier in the week, the St. Mary’s softball team beat Nebraska at Omaha, 4-0, at the 2011 Best Western Premier Spring Fling on Friday.

Sophomore designated player Jared Gonzalez (San Antonio) led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while sophomore outfielder Alex Garcia (San Antonio) also drove in a run.

Cameron got the better of St. Mary’s hours later, however, topping the Lady Rattlers 9-1 in the tournament. The event is hosted by Texas Woman’s. Centerfielder Katie Nichols (San Antonio) drove in the lone run in defeat.

St. Mary’s couldn’t recover from an early hole, as Cameron jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first and made it 4-0 in the fourth.

Against Nebraska at Omaha, it was the Rattlers doing the early scoring. St. Mary’s scattered runs over the first two innings to lead 2-0 before tacking on two more in the fifth.

Emily Brittain (Fr., Corpus Christi, Texas), the reigning Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week, pitched six shutout innings for St. Mary’s to improve to 8-5 on the year. She struck out two, walked one and allowed just four hits.

The Rattlers are 13-11 on the season.
