ABILENE, Texas – A big second inning was all the Lady Rattlers needed to open up Abilene Christian’s Whitten Inn Classic with a resounding victory Saturday.

St. Mary’s scored four runs in the second and Jared Gonzalez blasted a two-run shot in the seventh for good measure, fueling the Lady Rattlers past Cameron 6-2 at Crutcher Scott Field.

The Rattlers dropped their second game of the tournament, losing 15-4 to Abilene Christian in five innings.

Against Cameron, Emily Brittain (Fr., Corpus Christi, Texas) got the Rattlers’ good fortune going with an RBI single to left field in the top of the second that drove in Gonzalez (So., San Antonio), who led off the inning by advancing on an error. Kelly Baker (Sr., Arlington, Texas) then drove in Richelle Morales (Jr., San Antonio), who walked, on a sacrifice fly to left field. Brittain and Shelly Lee (So., San Antonio) would then each score on errors, opening up a commanding 4-0 lead for St. Mary’s.

Cameron sprinkled runs in the second and fifth innings to trail 4-2, but Gonzalez’s seventh-inning blast to center field ensured there would be no Cameron comeback.

Brittain went the distance on the rubber, striking out seven on 105 pitches.

Lee went 2 for 3 with one run scored, while Gonzalez finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Against Abilene Christian, outfielder Lauren Miller (Sr., Baytown, Texas) led the Rattlers with a three-run blast. She finished 1 for 2 with a run scored.

St. Mary’s enters Sunday’s final round of tournament play with a 5-2 record on the season.
