San Antonio – Need proof that St. Mary’s pitching staff is legit?

Pitcher Carl O’Neal was named the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, becoming the fourth Rattler to win the award this season.

O’Neal (So., San Antonio) fanned 11 and allowed just four hits in a complete-game, 11-1 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday. The graduate of Clark High School joins Matt Holland (Sr., Shreveport, La.), Greg Herbst (Sr., San Antonio) and Skye Severns (Jr., Claremont, Calif.) in earning Pitcher of the Week honors this season.

O’Neal is 5-3 this season, with a 2.93 ERA over 11 starts. He has struck out 57 with 24 walks in 61.1 innings.

No. 8 St. Mary’s is 34-8 with a 21-3 record in Heartland Conference play, closing in on the regular-season title and the right to host the Heartland Conference Tournament. St. Mary’s holds a five-game lead over second-place St. Edward’s with six games left on the league schedule.

The Rattlers will travel to play at Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
