San Antonio – Tennis might seem like an individual sport on occasion, but it most definitely is a team sport in every sense of the phrase.

And while the St. Mary’s men have long been aware of that fact, it’s something to which they’re continually learning to adjust on the court.

“We are getting better as a team and becoming aware of how our individual results affect the overall performance of the team,” junior Marcin Marczewski (Warsaw, Poland) said. “Tennis might seem like an individualistic sport, but it is a team effort. You depend on others, and others depend on you.”

Still trying to master the art, the Rattlers were nipped by East Central University, 6-3, late last week at St. Mary’s Tennis Courts. St. Mary’s couldn’t quite pull off the comeback after falling behind 0-3 in doubles action.

“It was very hard to come back from the 0-3 start,” Marczewski said. “We need one of our three doubles pairs to get a point so we can stay even more competitive in singles. If you look at the singles scores, you will realize that all the matches were very close and competitive.”

St. Mary’s will host Newman at 1 p.m. Monday in Heartland Conference action.
