AUSTIN, Texas – St. Mary’s men’s golf team took third place at the St. Edward’s Invitational after firing a team total of 299 in Tuesday’s third and final round.

Matt Vela (Sr., San Antonio) led the way by following his first- and- second-round scores of 73 by firing a 74 in the third round to place in a tie for sixth place individually. Vela shot 220 for the tournament.

Right behind Vela, Jeff Rein (Sr., San Antonio) shot 222 to finish in a tie for ninth. He also fired a 74 in the final round.

Chris Becker (Jr., San Antonio) turned in a high-quality showing by shooting 222 following a tournament in which he progressed with each round. After firing a 78 in the first round, he shot 74 and 72 over the ensuing rounds. Becker finished tied for 13th.

Sam Jernigan (Jr., San Antonio) shot 229 to finish in a tie for 25th.

St. Mary’s entered the final round in second place, trailing eventual tournament-champion Abilene Christian. Abilene Christian shot 877 for the tournament, while Barry University snuck up the standings to finish second at 879.
