San Antonio – St. Mary’s jumped to a four-point halftime lead over cross-town rival Incarnate Word on Tuesday, but couldn’t hold on, falling 66-53 in a non-conference road game.

Guard Jackie Edwards (So., San Antonio) and forward Morgan Pullins (Fr., Franklin, Mich.) paced the Lady Rattlers with 10 points apiece, while point guard Liz Boyd (Jr., San Antonio) and guard Danielle Vargas (Fr., Edinburg, Texas) chipped in nine points apiece.

St. Mary’s (0-6) led UIW (4-0) early, jumping to a 26-22 halftime lead thanks to a strong defensive effort. But the Cardinals bounced back to shoot 70.6 percent (12 for 17) in the second half, while also going 17 for 20 at the foul stripe.

Conversely, the Lady Rattlers’ offense went cold, following up a 12-for-30 first half with an 8-for-24 shooting effort from the floor in the second stanza.

St. Mary’s attempted just 14 free throws in the game, while the Cardinals made 20 alone.

The Lady Rattlers had strong bench play in the game, with 53 of their 66 points coming from reserves. Still, UIW held serve.

With the Lady Rattlers leading 38-37 with 12 minutes left, the Cardinals went on a tear, reeling off 11 straight points to lead 48-38. UIW stretched the lead to as large as 14 over the final minutes.

St. Mary’s will return to action after Thanksgiving, heading off to the West Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon, Texas for a two-day tournament beginning Friday.
