Abilene, Texas – St. Mary’s senior Sam Jernigan is tied for eighth place after one round of Abilene Christian’s Charles Coody West Texas Invitational, where the Rattlers sit 12th as a team.

Jernigan, a San Antonio native from Reagan High School, shot 36-34 for a two-round total of 70 on Monday.

Brothers Chris Becker (Sr., San Antonio) and Kyle Becker (Sr., San Antonio) carded identical scores of 76, with each shooting 37 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine. The Beckers are tied for 49th place.

Abilene Christian’s Alex Carpenter paced the field with a first-round 65, leading Jernigan by five shots entering the final day of action. ACU also leads as a team after shooting 279.

The tournament will resume Tuesday.

St. Mary’s University has six athletic national titles: men’s basketball (1989-NAIA), baseball (2001-NCAA Div. II), softball (1986-NAIA and 2002-NCAA Div. II) and an individual national champion in men’s golf (2006&-NCAA Div. II) and a national academic championship in men’s golf (2009-NCAA Div. II). St. Mary’s also had more than 40 percent of its athletes named to conference, regional and/or national honor rolls this past year. St. Mary’s student-athletes graduation rate is 65 percent, higher than the NCAA Division II average of 55 percent.
