ROUND ROCK, Texas – Alejandra Cantu shaved one stroke off her score in Tuesday’s final round of the Heartland Conference Women’s Golf Championship, but she couldn’t help thinking about a few near-misses down the stretch.

“I had one three-putt yesterday,” the junior from Mission, Texas, said of Monday’s first round. “Today, I three-putted three of the final four holes.”

Even so, Cantu pieced together a fine performance at the conference tournament, finishing 15th with a score of 165 to help the Rattlers place fifth as a team.

Cantu shot an 82 on Tuesday, while teammate Cami Furgeson (So., Newcastle, Calif.) shot 86 to finish in a tie for 17th with a two-round score of 168.

St. Edward’s Melissa Gonzalez won the individual title at 148, leading the Hilltoppers to the team title.

St. Mary’s shot 695 as a team.

“It was a good learning experience for us,” Furgeson said. “It was a lot different conditions than we’re used to. The wind was a lot stronger and the competition we played with was a lot different from what we’re used to.”

Sophomore Julia Dickens, a native of Fredericksburg, Texas, shot 84 to card a two-day total of 173. Erika Patterson (Jr., San Antonio) shot 189, while Megan Garza (So., San Antonio) turned in one of her best efforts by shooting 207.
