ABILENE, Texas – Taryn Munoz tossed a five-hitter, while Lauren Miller had three base hits to lead St. Mary’s University to its 11th straight victory to the start the season, 8-1 over 17th-ranked Abilene Christian University on the first day of the CBS Insurance Classic at Wells Field. Cameron University defeated the Rattlers, 8-2, for St. Mary’s first loss of the season in the nightcap.

In the first game of the day, the Rattlers fell behind in the first inning, and then pulled away late for a convincing 8-1 win over 17th-ranked Abilene Christian University. The Rattlers picked up just two hits over the first four innings, but finally broke through against Wildcat pitcher Shelby Hall in the fifth inning. Alyssa Alfaro (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas) led off with a double to right. A ground out to shortstop by Sarah Perez (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) moved Alfaro to third and Lia Provence (Jr., Bastrop, Texas) brought Alfaro home on a ground out to the pitcher, tying the score at 1-1.

One inning later the Rattlers blew the game wide open. Lauren Miller (Jr., Baytown, Texas) singled to lead off and two outs later, pinch hitter Shelly Lee (Fr., San Antonio) walked. That brought up Chelsea Wenske (Jr., Shiner, Texas) smashed her first homerun of the season to make the score 4-1. In the seventh inning the Rattlers put five of the first six batters on to score four insurance runs for the final margin.

Taryn Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) picked up her sixth win against no losses this season, tossing her fifth complete game in six starts. She allowed just 1 run on 5 hits and no walks. Hall took the loss, allowing 8 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks in 6 1/3 innings of work. She fell to 0-3 this season.

In the second game of the day, Cameron scored three runs in the second inning and the Rattlers never recovered in the loss. Heather Haas (Fr., Shiner, Texas) took her first loss of the season and fell to 4-1. Perez smacked her first homerun as a Rattler and drove in two runs to lead the St. Mary’s offense.

With the split, St. Mary’s is now 11-1 this season. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday at 10 a.m. when they face Emporia State University.
