Goodwell, Okla. – Taryn Munoz tossed a two-hit shutout in the first game, while the St. Mary’s University offense scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally the Rattlers to a win in the second game, completing a 10-0, 8-4, sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State University in softball action Sunday afternoon.
In the first game, Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) allowed just 2 hits and no walks, while striking out 5 to pick up the victory. She has a 15-5 record on the mound this season. St. Mary’s broke open a scoreless game in the third inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring 6 runs. The big blow was a 3-run homerun by Alyssa Alfaro (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas). The blast was Alfaro’s team-best sixth of the season. Kelly Baker (Jr., Arlington, Texas) wrapped up the scoring in the inning with a 3-run homerun of her own.
In the second game, the Rattlers fell to 3-0 after the first two innings, before rallying late for the win. Alfaro started the comeback in the second inning, smacking a one-out triple. Lauren Miller (Jr., Baytown, Texas) then lofted a sacrifice fly to score Alfaro. Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) came up next and smashed her fourth homerun of the season to make it a one-run game. That was where the score would stay until the seventh inning. The Rattlers sent nine batters to the plate that inning and brought home six runs to give them the victory.
Crystal Keller (Fr., La Coste, Texas) evened her record at 3-3 this season, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 4.
With the sweep, St. Mary’s is now 25-10 overall and a perfect 11-0 in Heartland Conference play this season. OPSU fell to 2-25, 0-10. The two teams will wrap up their three-game series with a single game on Monday at noon in Goodwell, Okla.
