San Antonio – Matt Holland tossed a three-hit shutout, while Alfonso Maldonado allowed just one run in a complete game victory, as St. Mary’s University swept a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader against St. Edward’s University, 11-1, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.

In the first game, Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) made a valiant bid for his second straight shutout, but fell just short, allowing a single run in the top of the seventh inning. Maldonado finished the game allowing just 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 9. He improved 2-0 this season with the victory.

The St. Mary’s offense staked Maldonado to a big early lead, scoring 10 runs over the first three innings. Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio) had 3 hits and scored 3 runs. James Hipp (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) went 2-for-2 with 2 walks, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Ryan Morrow (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) also had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs.

In the second game, Jason Garcia (Jr., Falfurrias, Texas) gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single. Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) allowed just 1 hit over the first six innings, then held on over the final three innings, stranding three Hilltopper baserunners to preserve his first collegiate shutout. Holland improved to 2-1 with the victory. Eight of the nine Rattler starters picked up at least one hit, including four with two hits.

With the sweep, St. Mary’s is now 5-4 overall and 5-4 in Heartland Conference play this season. St. Edward’s fell to 5-4, 5-4, as well. The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon, with a single game, starting at noon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
