San Antonio – St. Mary’s University softball player Taryn Munoz was named Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week for her play last weekend at the CBS Insurance Classic, it was announced by the league office on Thursday.

Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) earned All-Tournament recognition at the CBS Insurance Classic last weekend in Abilene, Texas, going 2-1 with a 2.51 earned run average. She had 14 strikeouts against just 5 walks in 22.1 innings of work. Munoz tossed complete games in all of her three starts. Her only loss came in 9 innings against Emporia State University. She allowed just 1 run on 7 hits and no walks to 17th-ranked Abilene Christian University in the tournament opener. She wrapped up the weekend by allowing just 3 earned runs to Henderson State University on 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 6 in the complete game win.

For the season Munoz is 7-1 with a 2.10 ERA. She has 7 complete games and 1 shutout in 8 starts. She has struck out 50 batters against 14 walks in 56.2 innings of work. Opposing batters are hitting .223 against her. Munoz ranks second in the Heartland Conference in ERA, leads the league in wins and innings pitched and is third in strikeouts.

This is Munoz’s first Heartland Conference honor this season, and the third Rattler. In the first week of the season, Christina Rodriguez (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) was named Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week, while Heather Haas (Fr., Shiner, Texas) received Pitcher of the Week recognition.

Munoz and St. Mary’s will return home for their first home games of the season this Saturday against 17th-ranked Abilene Christian University. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at  3 p.m. at the St. Mary’s University Softball Field. The Rattlers lead the Heartland Conference with a 12-3 overall record this season. ACU is currently 5-6 this season.
