Abilene, Texas – The St. Mary’s University men’s golf team sits in 12th place after the first day of the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate, which is hosted by Abilene Christian University.

The Rattlers shot 296 in the first round, leaving them 19 strokes off the lead entering today’s final round. They were led by senior Jeff Rein, a San Antonio native who graduated from Central Catholic, who is tied for eighth place with a two-under-par 69.

He shot a 36 on the front nine and a 33 on the back nine.

Matt Vela (Sr., San Antonio), the Rattlers’ next-best Rattler in the round, shot a 74, which put him in a tie for 43rd place.

Tim Paiz (So., San Antonio) shot a 76, while Sam Jernigan (Jr., San Antonio) shot a 77 and Guy Goodspeed (Jr., Del Rio, Texas) shot a 79.
