Odessa, Texas – With 45 seconds left in regulation, the University of Texas-Permian Basin’s Jose Anchondo found the back of the net on a penalty kick to defeat the St. Mary’s University men’s soccer team 1-0.

The penalty kicked capped off an afternoon in which the squads combined for 32 shots and 14 fouls, but nearly went all game without finding the back of the net.

St. Mary’s goalkeeper David Schmelzer (Fr., Castroville, Texas) saved six of the seven shots Texas-Permian Basin put on goal.

Danny Kelly (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) nearly produced half of the Rattlers’ shots on goal, putting three near the net. Of the Rattlers’ 17 shots, seven were on goal.

St. Mary’s (3-9) returns home Sunday in a rivalry clash against the University of the Incarnate Word. Game time is 1 p.m.
