San Antonio – St. Mary’s University men’s basketball player Kevin Kotzur was named NCAA Division II All-South Central Region by Daktronics Inc. for his play during the 2009-2010 season, it was announced on Thursday.

Kotzur (Fr., La Vernia, Texas) had one of the top seasons for a freshman in St. Mary’s history in 2009-2010. Kotzur led the Rattlers with 15.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 65.6 percent from the field. He made 189 of 288 shots from the field and also made 93 of 120 free throws (77.5 percent). His field goal percent is the second highest for a single season in school history. Kotzur also blocked 42 shots this season, the second most in school history for a season. His eight blocks against Texas A&M University-Commerce is a school record for a single game.

Kotzur was not only the only freshman on either the first or second teams, but was the only underclassman to be honored by Daktronics.

In addition to his all-region award, Kotzur was named Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Kotzur was also named first team All-Heartland Conference, the only freshman to be named to either the first or second team. He received Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors three times.

St. Mary’s finished the 2009-2010 season with a 17-13 record and finished as the runner-up in the Heartland Conference Tournament. The Rattlers return nine letterwinners for the 2010-2011 season.
