San Antonio – The University of the Incarnate Word smacked three homeruns and took advantage of five St. Mary’s University fielding errors to defeat the Rattlers, 11-6, in Heartland Conference softball action at St. Mary’s University Softball Field.

The Rattlers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Christiana Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) homerun to left-center field. The blast was her fifth of the season. However, the Cardinals scored six runs in the top of the third inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Taryn Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) fell to 17-9 with the loss, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk in 3.1 innings of work. Briana Sanchez picked up the win, allowing 6 runs on 10 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 10. She is now 18-6 with the win.

Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) was 3-for-4 with a triple, 3 RBI and a run scored. Rodriguez and Katie Nichols (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) both added two hits each.

With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 28-15 overall and 13-2 in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers fell to second place in the Heartland Conference, one game behind Texas A&M International University. UIW improved to 22-18 and 10-4. The Rattlers will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Angelo State University at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Softball Field.
