Austin, Texas – St. Mary’s University used an explosive offensive attack in the first game, and then pulled away late in the second game to sweep a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader from St. Edward’s University, 15-1, 8-4, Thursday afternoon at Lucien-Hamilton Field.

The Rattlers scored 14 runs over the first three innings to turn the first game into a laugher early. St. Mary’s sent eight batters to the plate in the first, 12 batters in the second and nine more in the third inning.

With the sweep, St. Mary’s is now 24-10 overall and 21-9 in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers have rebounded from a three-game sweep at the hands of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin to win three in a row. SEU is now 21-16, 18-14. The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Friday with a doubleheader, starting at noon. The Rattlers picked up 16 hits over those three innings. All nine Rattler starters had at least one hit in the game, with six picking up two or more. Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio) and Jason Garcia (Jr., Falfurrias, Texas) led the way with four hits each. Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio) smacked his fifth homerun of the season.

That was more than enough support for Alfonso Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas). The Heartland Conference leader among starting pitchers in earned run average limited the Hilltoppers to just 1 run on 3 hits, while striking out 6 in the complete game victory. He is now 6-3 this season on the mound.

In the second game, the Rattlers again took the early lead, but this time the Hilltoppers rallied. Baros hit his second homerun of the doubleheader, a two-run shot in the second inning as St. Mary’s took an early 4-0 lead. But SEU rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, keyed by a two-run homerun by Adam Shank, tying the game at 4-4. Right back came the Rattlers, with Greg Herbst (Jr., San Antonio) smashing a three-run homerun to give the Rattlers the lead for good at 7-4.

Matt Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) settled down after the fourth inning and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7 in the complete game victory. He improved to 6-2 with the victory.
