San Antonio – Alfonso Maldonado and Matt Holland each tossed complete game victories on the mound, while Greg Herbst smashed a three home run to lead a late inning comeback in game two as St. Mary’s University swept a Heartland Conference doubleheader against Lincoln University, 8-3, 9-5, Friday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Field.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Rattlers took an early 4-0 lead behind the strong pitching of Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) and never trailed. Maldonado went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out six. He is now 8-3 this season. James Hipp (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) led the offense, smacking a 2-run homerun in the first inning. Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio) went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Rattlers had to rally twice to finally pick up the victory. Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) went the distance, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out seven. He is now 9-2 this season. Lincoln took an early 2-0 lead, but the Rattlers rallied to take the lead in the fourth inning. St. Mary’s had just one hit in the inning, but two walks, a hit batsmen and an error helped the Rattlers score three times to take a 4-2 lead.

However, Lincoln took advantage of a key error and scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to retake the lead at 5-4. Gus Durst hit a 2-run double to make the score 5-4. In the sixth inning the Rattlers finally put the game away with five runs. Again, the Rattlers took advantage of Lincoln pitching errors. The Blue Tigers walked four Rattler batters and hit one other. Herbst (Jr., San Antonio) had the only hit of the inning for St. Mary’s, a 3-run homerun as St. Mary’s pulled away.

With the sweep St. Mary’s is now 34-14 overall and 30-12 in Heartland Conference play. Lincoln is now 12-31, 10-30. The Rattlers now trail the University of the Incarnate Word by just a single game in the Heartland Conference standings after the Cardinals split a doubleheader against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Friday. The Rattlers and the Blue Tigers will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday, with a doubleheader starting at noon at V.J. Keefe Field.
