San Antonio – St. Mary’s University gave 22nd-ranked Washburn University all it could handle, but fell to by a 5-1 count in intercollegiate men’s tennis action Wednesday morning at the St. Mary’s University Tennis Courts.

In the doubles action, Washburn took two of the three points. The team of Marcin Marczewski (So., Warsaw, Poland) and Marcos Villarreal (Sr., Corpus Christi, Texas) defeated Yann Kasay and Emmanuel Laurent, 8-4 at number three singles. The number one singles match was a tight affair, but Simon Blondin and Ryan Ward edged Nestor Moreno (So., Bogota, Columbia) and Vitas Van Dijk (Sr., Paramaribo, Suriname), 9-7.

The number one singles match was a battle royale, lasting 2:40. The first game alone took over 20 minutes. Branden Joost finally came out on top, defeating Marczewski, 6-4, 7-6. That victory clinched the match for Washburn, which won the other three singles matches that had already been completed. The remaining singles matches were not finished.

With the loss, the Rattlers are now 7-6 this season. Washburn improved to 6-4. St. Mary’s will return to action on Saturday, when they host Bethany College at the St. Mary’s Tennis Courts at 9 a.m.

St. Mary’s is home to 13 Academic All-Americans and 225 student-athletes who have earned regional or national academic awards. St. Mary’s student-athletes graduation rate is 63 percent.
